Heat Stroke We hear over and over on the news about owners leaving animals in the car during warm weather but it still happens. Also did you know your animal can get heat stroke by just being outside on a warm day. Some things to watch out for are rapid breathing, wide eyes, thick saliva, vomiting, staggering, diarrhea and seizuring. Animals overheat more quickly than humans do, they wear their fur coat all year long and they do not sweat. They cool there bodies by panting which is not as effective as sweating. Heat stroke is deadly and must be treated as an emergency. The first thing is to immerse your pet into cool water (not cold). Make sure you have a fan on your pet or place in an air conditioned room. Sponge the stomach and groin area and make sure you wet his tongue. Place rolled up wet towels against his head, neck, tummy and between the legs. When his temperature drops to 103 stop cooling efforts. Seek veterinary assistance. To prevent heat stroke provide your pet with shade, ventilation, a wading pool and cool drinking water. Keep in mind that shade moves as the earth rotates. Make sure their water container is large enough to not be knocked over and keep walks to a minimum on hot days. For more information call our office.
DISTEMPER IN DOGS Most recently our surrounding area has been affected with Distemper. Distemper is a highly contagious disease of dogs. It is caused by a virus that is easily spread through the air and by contaminated objects, much like the cold virus spreads in people. Though the disease occurs more often in young dogs, those of any age may contact distemper. This is especially true of animals under stress or those that are relatively isolated from other dogs. Signs range from mild respiratory problems, such as runny eyes and nose to severe diarrhea, vomiting and seizures. Many recovered dogs are left with uncontrollable muscle or limb jerking and or periodic convulsions. Vaccination is the best means of preventing distemper.
